SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A defensive battle did not go the way of the Swarthmore College field hockey team on Saturday, October 21 as the Garnet fell by a 2-0 score to the visiting Gettysburg Bullets.
Prior to the game, the team honored its six seniors:
Ellory Laning,
Clare Perez,
Amy Gilligan,
Jane Blicher,
Nicole Phalen and
Sierra Spencer.
Gettysburg held a narrow 8-6 advantage on penalty corners a 9-6 margin in shots on goal. Perez registered four shots on net as
Sophie Peipher added two more. Laning and
Zelda Bank combined for six and saves and a defensive save by
Riya Garg at the end of the first brought the total to seven.
Swarthmore had the first opportunity of the day with a shot by Perez that was unable to find the back of the net. The Bullets answered with a corner and later poked one past Laning at 13:38. Neither team saw many chances for the remainder of the first before Garg kept the Garnet within one with a last-minute denial.
