Field Hockey Falls to Bullets on Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A defensive battle did not go the way of the Swarthmore College field hockey team on Saturday, October 21 as the Garnet fell by a 2-0 score to the visiting Gettysburg Bullets.

Prior to the game, the team honored its six seniors: Ellory Laning, Clare Perez, Amy Gilligan, Jane Blicher, Nicole Phalen and Sierra Spencer.

Gettysburg held a narrow 8-6 advantage on penalty corners a 9-6 margin in shots on goal. Perez registered four shots on net as Sophie Peipher added two more. Laning and Zelda Bank combined for six and saves and a defensive save by Riya Garg at the end of the first brought the total to seven.

Swarthmore had the first opportunity of the day with a shot by Perez that was unable to find the back of the net. The Bullets answered with a corner and later poked one past Laning at 13:38. Neither team saw many chances for the remainder of the first before Garg kept the Garnet within one with a last-minute denial.

In the second, Bank made a series of saves in the opening minutes. On the other end, Perez followed up with two shots of her own that were turned away. With exactly 10 minutes remaining, the Bullets added an insurance tally and withstood a series of Swarthmore corners to preserve the shutout.

Swarthmore remains at home when it hosts Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m.
