SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer took advantage of a late-season non-conference game on Monday evening to get quality playing time for as many players as possible, cycling 23 players onto the field. With just nine previous starts this year among Monday's 10 starting field players, the Garnet played the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors to a scoreless first half. The visitors left with a 2-1 win, however, netting a pair of corner kick goals in the second half.
The Garnet held a 17-12 advantage on shots and had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Rutgers-Camden turned two of their seven corner kicks into goals. In the 51st minute, a ball served in from the right corner was volleyed in by Brian Palangi on the left side. Zach Viscusi appeared to make the team save near the right post, but the shot was deemed to have crossed the line prior to that stop.
In the 73rd minute, the Garnet responded with a goal of their own, ending a long scoring drought. Julian Bueno served in a restart following a foul right in front of Swarthmore's bench. The Camden keeper misplayed the ball and Kevin Murphy was all alone on the other end of the pass. Murphy guided the ball in with his chest for his first collegiate goal.
The celebration was short-lived as the Scarlet Raptors squeezed a shot off a corner just inside the left post 1:35 later.
Oliver Steinglass recorded three saves in 60 minutes in net for the Garnet. Christian Alfaro completed the contest and registered his first minutes on the year.
Four yellow cards were issued to Rutgers-Camden while Swarthmore received one.
The Garnet continue play at home on Wednesday against Washington College.
