Women's Soccer Wins Wild Game With Diplomats

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Scoring opportunities abounded Sunday afternoon for No. 10 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer against the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats. After scoring goals in the seventh and 11th minutes, the Garnet generated shot after shot, hitting the crossbar and post on multiple occassions and just missing wide on several other opportunities. The Garnet tallied 53 shots in the contest and found the game-winner in the 96th minute, winning 3-2.

Katie Dougherty scored twice including the golden goal. Marin McCoy netted Swarthmore's first goal, giving her 11 on the season and 38 for her career, tying her for first all-time in Swarthmore's record book.

F&M goalkeeper Gabby Panayotakis stood on her head, recording 15 saves.

McCoy put Swarthmore on the board seven minutes in, chipping in a goal off the keeper from point-blank range.

In the 11th minute McCoy won a failed clear short of midfield and distributed a pass to Dougherty on the right wing. Dougherty darted towards goal and slid home a goal inside the far post for her first score of the game.

F&M responded with a long-distance goal from Reanna Leoni in the 37th minute and then another one just 46 seconds after halftime.

With the game knotted at 2-2, the Garnet's attempts at pulling ahead were constantly denied. In the final 90 seconds of action, the Garnet had a series of shots go off the post and then get saved on the doorstep in what seemed to happen repeatedly throughout the half.

The Garnet had a breakaway early in overtime, but Panayotakis charged and slid to disrupt Lizzie King's chance at a game-winner. Five minutes into overtime, the Garnet earned a corner kick. Lichtenstein sent the pass into the box where it pinballed around, caromed off the crossbar, and was eventually headed in on the goalline by Dougherty to win the game.

The Garnet improved to 9-2 and 3-1 in Centennial play. Swarthmore plays at Washington College on Wednesday.
