SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Despite a strong showing at the free throw line, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell by a 65-57 score to the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Tuesday, January 24.
The Garnet were 21-of 24 from the charity stripe (87.5 percent) and were led by freshman
Lindsay O'Sullivan, who sank all 10 of her tries en route to a team-high 16 points.
Maggie O'Neil scored 13 points to go with four rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks while
Raina Williams swatted three shots in 16 minutes.
Elizabeth Stiles also added nine for the Garnet, which converted 26 F&M giveaways into 27 points on the other end.
An early Swarthmore lead was erased by an 8-0 run from the Diplomats in the first quarter, but the Garnet responded with a seven-point streak of its own to end the period on a 14-12 advantage.
The visiting Diplomats outscored the Garnet by a 22-9 margin in the second quarter and took a 34-23 lead into the break. In the third, a Stiles trey and free throws by O'Sullivan made it a one-possession game at 36-33 before F&M re-established a double-digit lead. O'Sullivan went off for eight more points in the final frame as
Abigail Pirron scored four on 2-of-2 shooting, but it was not enough to catch the Dips.
Swarthmore looks for its first road win of the season on Thursday, Jan. 26 when it travels to Washington College for a 6 p.m. showdown. The Garnet won the earlier meeting of the season by a 77-70 margin.
