BALTIMORE—No. 16 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball faced a tough task on Thursday night, playing a conference road game at Johns Hopkins University, a team that's historically given the Garnet trouble. Swarthmore dropped its 11th straight game against the Blue Jays, falling 70-52. The loss is only the second of the season for Swarthmore (12-2, 6-1 Centennial). Johns Hopkins improved to 8-6, 4-3 Centennial.
A 14-2 run by the Blue Jays in the middle of the first half proved to be the difference in the contest. The Blue Jays were hot in the first half, shooting 58.3 percent from the floor to establish a 15-point lead by halftime. The Garnet constantly tried to make up the difference, pulling within 10 points in the second half. However, the Garnet couldn't catch up to the Blue Jays down the stretch.
Cam Wiley and
Zack Yonda led the Garnet with 13 points each, and
Chris Bourne added 12 points. Yonda shot 6-for-8 (75 percent) from the floor and Bourne went 5-for-6 (83.3 percent). The Garnet finished with a 38.5 percent shooting mark from the floor. Swarthmore, typically a strong shooting team from 3-point range, struggled from downtown, only making 2-of-15 attempts (13.3 percent), a season low.
Swarthmore did hold a three rebound advantage, out-rebounding Hopkins 34-31.
Swarthmore wraps up a challenging three-game week on Saturday with a 3 p.m. date with the F&M College Diplomats.
