SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Playing in one of the toughest stretches of the season so far, the shorthanded Swarthmore College men's basketball team faced its fourth opponent in eight days, taking on the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Saturday. The home game was a rematch of last season's Centennial Conference Championship, and unfortunately for the Garnet, the outcome repeated itself in favor of the Diplomats.
No. 16 Swarthmore (12-3, 6-2 Centennial) fell 83-66 to Franklin & Marshall (10-5, 4-4), losing back-to-back games for the first time since last season (which were losses to Johns Hopkins University and F&M as well).
Four Garnet players scored in double figures with Chris Bourne dropping a team-high 18 points. Bourne is nearing the 1,000-points mark for his career, reaching 958 after today's game. Robbie Walsh scored 17 points, and both big men grabbed eight rebounds as Swarthmore won the rebound battle 34-22. Cam Wiley contributed 12 points, and Sam Lebryk added 10.
For the visitors, J.C. McGrath shot 10-for-14 from the floor to score a game-high 30 points.
Swarthmore scored 52 of their 66 points from within the paint and struggled 3-point range for the second game in a row, going 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from long range.
F&M broke the game open with separate 9-0 and 10-0 runs in the first half and led by 18 going into the half. Swarthmore trailed by 26 with 11:38 to go in the second, but worked the deficit down to 11 with two minutes to go. The Garnet out-scored the Diplomats 42-41 in the second half.
The Garnet return to action on Wednesday with a home game against local rival Haverford College at 8 p.m.
