Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Hoops

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–After tying the game in the fourth quarter, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team was narrowly edged out by the visiting McDaniel College Green Terror by a score of 55-51 on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Garnet outrebounded the Terror, 39-36, and limited their opponents to a 30.5 field goal percentage, but could not overcome 21 turnovers on the evening.

Hayley Raymond shot 5-for-7 for a total of 13 points and Abigail Pirron also finished in double figures with 10 points. Lindsay O'Sullivan and Maggie O'Neil shared the team lead in rebounds with six each and the latter handed out five assists to go with two blocks.

Swarthmore trailed by seven after the first half and fell behind by 11 early in the third. A trey by O'Neil and a bucket from Raymond made it 33-27 with 6:27 remaining. McDaniel regained a double-digit lead before consecutive free throws by Pirron and Raymond cut it to 42-36 heading into the fourth.

The Garnet carried their momentum into the final period and went on a 6-0 run to start the quarter with further contributions from Pirron and Raymond. At 42 apiece, the Terror managed to reestablish their lead to four points. A Raina Williams layup made it a one-possession game and Swarthmore remained within striking distance down the stretch thanks to points from Pirron and O'Sullivan. Unfortunately for Swarthmore, however, it was unable to close the gap and recorded its 11th loss of the season.

The women's basketball team has a week off from competition before hosting archrival Haverford on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m.
