GALLOWAY, N.J.–Despite overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second half, the Swarthmore College field hockey team (2-2) fell 3-2 to the homestanding Stockton Ospreys (3-0) on Thursday, Sep. 8 after surrendering a goal in the 65th minute.
The Garnet started the game on the attack, putting four shots toward goal in the opening 10 minutes. Neither team found another opportunity until the 30-minute mark when Stockton earned a series of penalty corners after a save by sophomore
Zelda Bank. A tap in off a cross at 32:55 put the Ospreys ahead 1-0 and they took this lead into half after
Ursula Monaghan's shot with no time remaining was turned away.
Five minutes into the second period, the hosts doubled their lead, but a breakaway goal by freshman
Melissa Zavez minutes later restored the Garnet's deficit to one. At 53:21, Swarthmore tied the game on
Lizzy Stant's first goal of the season, which she buried after receiving a short pass from
Kathleen Carmichael.
The Garnet nearly took the lead in the 58th minute with shots on goal from Monaghan and
Jordyn Bell, but Stockton's Emily Sorochynskyj made two of her eight saves on the afternoon. On the other end, Bank made two denials of her own to keep the game knotted at two before the Ospreys broke through with a goal on a penalty corner at 64:16. A last-ditch effort by Zavez with 13 seconds left was saved as Swarthmore fell to 2-2 on the year.
The team resumes action on Saturday, Sep. 10 at 12 p.m. with a nonconference road game at Immaculata.
