MALVERN, Pa.–Juniors
Clare Perez and
Sierra Spencer each scored twice for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (3-2) as the Garnet romped to a 5-0 shutout of previously undefeated Immaculata (3-1) on Saturday, Sep. 10.
Kathleen Carmichael also scored for Swarthmore, which outshot the Mighty Macs, 16-7, and held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Swarthmore struck early as Perez found the back of the net at the 8:43 mark when she deflected in a ball from
Jordyn Bell for her first goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, the Garnet doubled their lead on Carmichael's marker off a penalty stroke and nearly went up 3-0, but missed on another stroke at 14:40.
Spencer netted her team-leading fifth goal of the year after earning a penalty corner and Perez added an insurance goal before half after knocking in a ball that was deflected around the goalkeeper.
The Garnet completed the scoring right before the end of the game on Spencer's second tally of the contest, which was a ball slotted into the right side of the cage.
