SWARTHMORE, Pa.—After 5,998 seconds of scoreless play, Swarthmore College Women's Soccer broke the deadlock with the University of Scranton Royals on Sarah Hancock's sudden victory goal.
Hancock scored with just two seconds remaining in the first half of overtime to lift No. 12 Swarthmore over the visiting Royals. The Garnet had the ball on a throw-in on the left sideline with 10 seconds remaining. Melissa Curran passed to Hannah Lichtenstein nearby who turned left and cranked a shot from about 30 yards away. Lichtenstein's shot sailed high into the air and when it finally came down, it plunked off the upper right end of the crossbar and bounded back into play. Hancock swept in towards the six and volleyed home a low screamer past the goalkeeper near post.
The Garnet created a decent number of chances throughout the game, taking 22 shots and putting seven of them on goal. Lichtenstein had six shots, a few near misses, including another one off the crossbar. Scranton posted eight total attempts and took three shots on goal. The Royals gave the Garnet an early scare with a pair of dangerous attempts from near the six in the second minute. Curran deflected one shot and then fellow back Yazmeen Namazie provided the team save on the goal line.
Sydney Hunter earned the win with 99:58 of scoreless play between the posts.
Swarthmore (3-0) returns to action with a tournament in Newark, N.J. on Saturday and Sunday.
