SWARTHMORE, Pa.–It took the Swarthmore College field hockey team (2-1) just over three minutes to find the back of the net in overtime in an exciting 2-1 victory over Arcadia on Sunday, Sep. 4.
Sierra Spencer recorded her fourth goal of the season as she guided in a hard hit ball by
Ursula Monaghan into the left corner of the net for Swarthmore's second win in as many days. Senior
Jordyn Bell also scored for the Garnet off an assist by freshman
Melissa Zavez.
Swarthmore controlled most of the action on the afternoon, holding a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal and earning seven penalty corners to Arcadia's two.
The Knights struck first after 20 minutes of play with an expert deflection into the open net for a 1-0 lead. The Garnet nearly equalized right before halftime with shots toward goal from Spencer,
Clare Perez and
Kathleen Carmichael, but trailed heading into the break.
Four minutes into the second half, Bell tallied her second goal of the weekend by cleaning up a bouncing ball from Zavez in front of the net. The Garnet nearly ended the game in regulation with a frenzy of shots in the final moments following a penalty corner at 70:00, but Arcadia's Brittany Hodson stood on her head between the pipes to force an extra period.
Swarthmore could not be denied, however, and broke through quickly in overtime to improve to 2-1. The team continues nonconference play at Stockton on Thursday, Sep. 8 at 4 p.m.
