BALTIMORE–The Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-7, 0-4 CC) dropped a hard-fought contest to the homestanding Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a 2-0 score on Friday, Sep. 30.
The Garnet outshot the Jays 14-10, with six of those of those attempts coming on goal, and held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners, but could not find the back of the net for the third consecutive game. Sophomore goalie
Zelda Bank made seven saves on the evening, including two in the opening three minutes.
Following that, the Garnet controlled the pace of play and earned several penalty corners, which translated into shots by
Ursula Monaghan and
Clare Perez. Unfortunately for the visitors, Hopkins struck first with the eventual game-winning goal in the 30th minute as Bridget Hampton knocked in a rebound after Bank's initial save.
In the second period, Swarthmore searched for an equalizer and generated promising opportunities early in the half.
Melissa Zavez and
Jordyn Bell each had shots on goal denied by the Hopkins keeper and Bank made saves of her own on the other end to keep the Garnet within one. The Blue Jays' Clare Kavanagh added an insurance goal at 59:27 and Swarthmore was unable to find an answer for the two-score deficit.
The field hockey team returns home for a game against Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
