SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Two early goals by the visiting Washington College Shorewomen (4-6, 2-2 CC) proved to be the difference as the Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-8, 0-5 CC) fell 2-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Sophomore keeper
Zelda Bank faced 21 shots and made 12 saves between the pipes.
Washington put its first goal on the board at 10:39 and doubled the lead a few minutes later on an unassisted goal by Olivia Auer. The Garnet recollected itself during a timeout and weathered three shots on goal, eventually earning its first penalty corner in the 19th minute.
Shortly after,
Katherine Ianni put a shot toward the net and
Jordyn Bell cleaned up the rebound for her fourth goal of the season. Bank was called upon again toward the end of the half and made a save in the final 10 seconds to keep Swarthmore within striking distance.
In the second half,
Melissa Zavez registered a shot on goal at 48:57 and was denied by the Shorewomen goalkeeper as the Garnet remained in search of an equalizer. Swarthmore earned a series of penalty corners toward the end of the game, but could not generate a shot on net and dropped its sixth consecutive contest.
The team looks to rebound on Saturday, Oct. 8 when it hosts Gettysburg at 12 p.m.
