GLASSBORO, N.J.–Sophomore libero
Sarah Girard was named to the All-Tournament Team as the Swarthmore College volleyball team (3-1) finished second at the Rowan Labor Day Invitational with 3-0 wins over Emmanuel and Widener on Saturday, Sep. 3.
The Garnet began the day with a sweep of Emmanuel, punctuated by 18 service aces, including six from
Elise Cummings, four each by
Mehra den Braven and
Olivia Leventhal and three from Girard. Swarthmore's defense limited the Saints to a .013 hitting percentage on 16 kills and 15 errors and its offensive attack was diverse as
Rachel Vresilovic led the team with seven kills and den Braven, Leventhal and
Malia Scott all totaled six. Scott also handed out 18 assists while Girard recorded a team-high 14 digs.
Swarthmore made quick work of their opponents in the first set, winning the frame by a 25-11 score. In set number two, the Garnet raced ahead to a 10-1 lead and never looked back. A 16-6 advantage forced an Emmanuel timeout and the Saints were eventually able to trim the deficit to seven at 21-14, but kills from den Braven and Leventhal sealed it for Swarthmore. Neither team hit well in the third, though the difference in the set proved to be a nine-point run for the Garnet which featured five aces by Cummings. Emmanuel later answered with a run of their own to save three match points before an attack error closed it out.
In the second match of the day, Swarthmore prevailed over local rival Widener by a 25-22, 27-25, 25-18 score. The duo of den Braven and
Sarah Wallace each finished with 13 kills and the former completed the double-double with a team-high 15 digs. Scott and Cummings also added double-doubles of their own in assists and digs as Girard narrowly missed with 14 digs and eight assists.
After capturing the first set, Swarthmore found itself down 21-13 in the second. A three-point run forced a Widener timeout and the teams traded points until the Pride led 23-17. The Garnet came within three to force another timeout before Widener inched closer to evening the match with a 24-20 advantage. Swarthmore answered by saving four match points with
Guin Mesh serving and gained a 2-0 lead as Wallace and Leventhal both swung kills. In set three, Widener was limited to a .071 mark on nine kills and six errors.
Swarthmore opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday, Sep. 10 when it hosts Ursinus for an 11 a.m. match.
