SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Tropical conditions inside Tarble Pavilion could not slow down the Swarthmore College volleyball team (4-1, 1-0 CC) as it rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Ursinus College (4-3, 0-1 CC) on Saturday, Sep. 10.
The Garnet prevailed by a 25-21, 25-6, 25-22 score to win their fourth consecutive match. Junior
Sarah Wallace recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs as did sophomore
Elise Cummings, who totaled 13 assists and 11 digs. Junior
Malia Scott handed out a team-high 17 assists and
Alice Liu hit .455 with six kills and two total blocks (one solo, one assisted).
The first set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes as neither team was able to establish more than a two-point advantage early on. A key moment in the game came with the Garnet trailing 17-19 before
Olivia Leventhal buried the kill to bring the hosts within one. With sophomore
Guin Mesh serving, Swarthmore went on a six-point run to go ahead 24-19 and earn five game points. Ursinus got two points back, but
Mehra den Braven ended their chances with a kill to close out the set.
Set number two belonged entirely to the Garnet as they limited the Bear's attack to a paltry -.464 mark on no kills and 13 errors. Cummings had two service aces in the frame as Wallace and
Sarah Girard each chipped in one.
The Bears led 13-7 in the third before a five-point run on Mesh's serve trimmed the Garnet's deficit to one. The visitors held onto a narrow lead at 18-17, but a block by Scott and freshman
Emma Morgan-Bennett energized the Garnet to a six-point run which featured two kills from Liu and two aces by Girard. Ursinus was able to save three match points after trailing 24-19 until Wallace concluded the match with her 11th kill of the day.
Swarthmore will play rival Widener on Tuesday before traveling to Aston, Pa. on Friday, Sep. 16 to face Rutgers-Camden and hosts Neumann in the Knights Invitational.
