SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 12 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer shut out the opposition 3-0 in back-to-back games, earning a 3-0 win against Eastern University on Saturday.
Hannah Lichtenstein, Marin McCoy and Seneca Kinn-Gurzo all found the back of the net. Sydney Hunter and Amy Shmoys split time in goal again Saturday. Hunter had three saves in the first half while Shmoys added two in the second.
The Garnet held a one-shot advantage over the Eagles through the first half (7-6), but poured it on in the second, out-shooting Eastern 17-3.
Lichtenstein put Swarthmore on the board in the 19th minute, collecting a failed clear near the top of the box and then lofting it over the head of Eastern's goalkeeper Adrianna Rowlands and just beneath the crossbar.
Swarthmore increased the lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute when Kinn-Gurzo popped a short pass over Eastern's back line for McCoy to chase down. McCoy beat Eastern's defenders to the ball and then chipped a shot over Eastern's sliding keeper for her second goal of the season.
The Garnet added an exclamation point to the win in the 71st minute. After a foul, Mele Johnson took a restart from the right wing and sent a ball into the box. Kinn-Gurzo ran to meet the ball and executed a leaping volley, catching the pass with her right foot and sending into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Swarthmore (2-0) plays at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the University of Scranton.
