Men's Soccer Tames Lions In Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer cruised to a 4-0 win on Saturday against the Albright College Lions in the opening game of the 2016 campaign.

Swarthmore senior Billy Evers recorded a pair of goals in the win. Sophomore Cameron Ricciardi and junior Ryan Ward added the other goals. The Garnet peppered the Lions repeatedly, taking 23 attempts compared to just two attempts by the Lions, neither of which were on goal. Sophomore Michael Thut and senior Ross Bednar split time manning the goal line in the combined shutout.

After a few early near misses, the Garnet capitalized in the 23rd minute. Ricciardi recovered a loose ball from Albright's backline and ripped a shot from outside the 18, curling it through traffic for the Garnet's opening goal.

In the 37th minute, Evers netted his first goal, dribbling into the left side of the box, cutting inside and ripping a right-footed shot between a pair of defenders and into the goal.

Three minutes later, the Garnet tacked on another goal as Ward blasted his first collegiate score. Ward, left alone about 25 yards out decided to crank a shot and zipped it to the far corner of the goal.

With a solid 3-0 lead after the first half, the Garnet attempted six shots in the second period. Evers added the final goal in the 86th minute, ripping a shot inside the right post from at least 25 yards out.

Swarthmore (1-0) continues the 18th Annual Garnet Alumni Classic on Sunday at 3 p.m. against SUNY Geneseo. Geneseo beat Rosemont College 5-0 in the first game of the classic on Saturday.
