Swarthmore Rolls to Shutout Win Over Virginia Wesleyan

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Sierra Spencer scored twice and Jordyn Bell tallied a goal and an assist as the Swarthmore College field hockey team picked up a 4-0 win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Sep. 3. Kathleen Carmichael also found the back of the net for the Garnet, which improved to 1-1 with the win.

Swarthmore outshot the Marlins 22-7 with a 14-3 advantage on shots toward goal and held a 16-5 margin in penalty corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Zelda Bank turned away two shots early in the first half before Swarthmore got on the board in the seventh minute as Spencer cleaned a ball that bounced of the goalie's foot. Less than five minutes later, Carmichael doubled the advantage with her first goal of the season by dribbling around the keeper for the score.

The Garnet attack continued to pepper the visitors with shots, including three in the half by senior Ursula Monaghan, but their lead remained at two going into halftime. In the second period, Swarthmore continued where it left off.

Around the 59 minute mark, Bell, Monaghan and Clare Perez all registered shots in goal in quick succession before a penalty corner was awarded. One minute later, Bell found the back of the net with a deflection on a hard shot by Sophie Peipher from the top of the circle. Spencer completed the scoring at 67:35 after taking a pass up the wing from Bell and deking the keeper for the goal.

The Garnet will play Arcadia in their third game in four days on Sunday, Sep. 4 at 12 p.m.
