Men's Soccer Edged In OT At Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer and the Muhlenberg College Mules needed extra time to settle Wednesday evening's contest. The visiting Garnet, making their third overtime appearance this season, couldn't come up with the golden goal this time and fell by a score of 2-1. Muhlenberg won with a successful penalty kick in the 98th minute.

Swarthmore struck first as Cameron Ricciardi ripped in a goal from outside the box in the 17th minute, his second of the season. The Garnet maintained the 1-0 lead and kept the Mules away from goal until the last second of the first half, when Michael Thut recorded a save on a free kick.

Muhlenberg eventually tied the game in the 60th minute on a goal by Pete Luther, finishing a deflected shot. In the 68th minute, the Garnet drew a red card and were forced to play a man down the remainder of the contest. Thut recorded a save on the resulting free kick and added another save less than three minutes later to keep the game knotted at 1-1.

The Garnet went for the lead in the 83rd minute, earning a corner kick that led to a shot by Nick Ambiel. Ambiel's shot, however, was saved and the game remained even through the rest of regulation.

Swarthmore had gone 2-0 in overtime so far this season, but only had one shot, a wide header, in the first seven minutes of overtime Wednesday.

After earning a corner kick, Muhlenberg was awarded a penalty kick and Christian Wieand successfully converted the try.

Swarthmore dropped to 5-4 (1-2 Centennial) and Muhlenberg improved to 3-4-2 (1-1-1 Centennial). The Garnet return home for a 4 p.m. game against Ursinus on Saturday.
