SWARTHMORE, Pa.—For the third consecutive game, Swarthmore College Men's Soccer needed extra time to determine the outcome. The Garnet earned a 2-1 win over visiting Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon with Michael Nafziger cashing in on the game-winning goal in the 109th minute.
With a little more than two minutes remaining in the second half of overtime, Nafziger snapped a shot aimed for the lower left corner of the goal but was denied. Billy Evers kept the ball in play on the rebound, slid a pass to Joey Bradley who located Omri Gal in the middle of the box. Gal went down in the box, but no foul was called and play continued. Nafziger was right in front of Gal, settled the loose ball, turned and fired a fadeaway shot that found the lower left corner this time and gave Swarthmore the sudden victory.
Swarthmore (6-4) improved to 2-2 in Centennial Conference play with the win and improved to 3-1 in overtime contests this season.
Ryan Meuth scored the Garnet's first goal, netting a penalty kick in the 61st minute. Meuth's goal opened the scoring. Swarthmore had been peppering Ursinus with shots up to that point but hadn't been able to find a goal in the run of play. Swarthmore took 12 shots in the first half, six on goal, including one saved off the line by an Ursinus defender. The Garnet added another 11 shots in the second half and finished with 28 total attempts and 12 on goal.
Swarthmore goalkeeper Michael Thut notched two saves in the win.
The Garnet take a brief break from Centennial action to play a non-conference game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kean University.
