COLLEGEVILE, Pa.–Facing a top ten team on the road for the second time this season, the Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-6, 0-3 CC) fell 6-0 to the No. 7 Ursinus College Bears on Wednesday, Sep. 28.
Ursinus used five first-half goals to prevent Swarthmore from earning its first conference win of the 2016 season. Sophomore goalie
Zelda Bank made seven saves, including two in the first minute of play, and faced 19 shots on the afternoon.
The visiting Garnet fell behind 4-0 before its first opportunity to score came at 17:11 on a penalty corner.
Katherine Ianni had a shot blocked by a defender and
Ursula Monaghan's try toward goal, one of three in the contest, was turned away.
In the second half, the Garnet limited the Bears to just one goal and generated more chances on offense. Swarthmore came close to putting one on the board in the 62nd minute when
Kathleen Carmichael had a shot on goal and
Sierra Spencer nearly cashed in the rebound before a defensive save kept Swarthmore scoreless.
The team remains on the road for a rare Friday night game at Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m.
