SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 9 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer stifled the visiting Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Swarthmore's defense flexed its muscles in the first Centennial Conference contest of the season, holding Franklin & Marshall (2-4, 0-1 Centennial) to just two shots. Swarthmore improved to 7-0 (1-0 Centennial) and continued its season-long shutout streak.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Amy Shmoys earned her second win of the year and recorded one save, a diving block on a close-range Diplomats' free kick.
The Garnet tallied 23 shots in the win, eight on goal.
Hannah Lichtenstein,
Katie Dougherty and
Brittany Weiderhold all scored in the win. Sophomore
Marin McCoy, who leads the Garnet with 14 points, assisted Swarthmore's first two goals of the game.
Swarthmore took the lead in the 25th minute with McCoy feeding the ball to Lichtenstein with a pass around the backline. Lichtenstein beat her defender to the ball in the right side of the box and slid a shot to the far side for the score.
Dougherty increased Swarthmore's lead in the 60th minute, curling in a goal from right to left after a pass from McCoy. Weiderhold capped off Swarthmore's scoring in the 70th minute after receiving a long pass from midfield from
Caroline Khanna. Weiderhold took long touch and then finished with a foal from the left side.
With a comfortable lead, the Garnet took the opportunity to play all of their available position player reserves.
Swarthmore hosts Widener on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
