SWARTHMORE, Pa.—In the 107th minute of scoreless play on Wednesday between Swarthmore College Men's Soccer and the Eastern University Eagles, Swarthmore junior Tommy Sheehan netted the game-winner with a quick free kick from just outside the box.
Swarthmore improved to 3-2 with the win and gave Eastern (3-1-1) its first loss.
Swarthmore senior Billy Evers drew a foul to the left of the box, just shy of the 18, with four minutes remaining in the second half of overtime. As the Garnet began to assemble on the opposite side of the box, Sheehan opted to not ask for 10 yards from the official and struck a quick shot towards the left of the net. Eastern goalkeeper Quentin Keibler was still directing traffic on the other side of the goal and was caught completely off guard by the quick free kick. Sheehan buried the golden goal, giving Swarthmore the instant win in its first overtime appearance of the 2016 campaign. After the contest, Sheehan commented that was probably the first time a play like that had ever worked.
Both teams had numerous opportunities to score throughout the game. Eastern took 22 shots and Swarthmore recorded 13. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Thut notched seven saves in the win. One of Thut's biggest saves game in the first half of overtime when he punched a well-struck ball over the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Swarthmore had a pair of headers in the 15th minute following a Sheehan corner kick that were turned away. Later, in the end of the 74th minute, Swarthmore again had a duo of attempts as Quentin Millette's shot was saved and Evers' attempt on the rebound was denied as well.
In the final seconds of regulation, Sheehan sent a ball upfield to freshman Zach Viscusi who dashed to a one-on-one with the keeper but had his shot attempt saved.
Swarthmore moves into Centennial Conference play on Saturday against Franklin & Marshall College at 7 p.m.
