SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Freshman
Sophie Peipher scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, including the game-winner, in Swarthmore's 4-3 victory over the visiting Neumann Knights on Wednesday, Sep. 14.
It is the second time this season that the Garnet have triumphed in overtime with their previous OT victory coming on Sep. 4 against Arcadia.
Both teams registered 19 shots, but Swarthmore had a significant 16-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Garnet got off to an early lead at 8:47 as
Kathleen Carmichael scored her third goal of the season with an expertly-placed penalty stroke.
Peipher's first goal of the afternoon came just under ten minutes later on a long shot from just inside the circle that deflected off a defender. The 2-0 lead, however, was short-lived as Neumann's Julia Mustin answered one minute later with her first of three goals on the day.
The Knights converted on a penalty corner in the 24th minute to even things up and sophomore keeper
Zelda Bank made two of her eight saves in the game to keep things knotted entering the break.
In the second half, Swarthmore struck first as
Jordyn Bell beat the keeper one-on-one after receiving Carmichael's pass on the break. Five minutes later, Bank came up with a save, but the ensuing rebound was tapped in by Mustin for the equalizer.
Neither team could take advantage of opportunities toward the end of the half and extra time was needed to settle the contest. Swarthmore wasted little time in finding the back of the net with Peipher's goal coming at 72:09 on
Ursula Monaghan's assist.
The Garnet open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, Sep. 17 when they travel to nationally-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a game at noon.
