SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Soccer tallied its first score of the 2016 campaign with a point-blank goal just seven minutes into the new season. Securing an early lead, Swarthmore went on to shut out the visiting Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors 3-0 on Thursday night.
Katie Dougherty, Marin McCoy and first-year Brittany Weiderhold all scored in the win. Sydney Hunter and Amy Shmoys split the halves in goal to combine for the shutout. The Garnet backline stifled Camden's attack, holding the Scarlet Raptors to zero shots on goal and just three total attempts.
Swarthmore's first goal came off a long throw-in by McCoy from the left sideline. McCoy found the head of Lichtenstein who flicked the pass backward into the box. Caroline Khanna charged in and beat the visiting keeper to the ball, nudging it forward to the far post where Dougherty took her time and tapped the ball in from just a foot or two away.
The Garnet continued to pressure the high backline and found their second goal of the game in the 54th minute. Mele Johnson crushed a cross from the back right flank all the way to a wide open McCoy on the left wing. McCoy fought off a defender and delivered a goal from 20 yards out.
Swarthmore began to work in reserves, including Brittany Weiderhold who was the first of the 10 Garnet freshmen to enter the contest. Ten minutes after entering, Weiderhold scored her first collegiate goal. Winning a ball at midfield, she pushed the ball ahead, squeezing it between the centerbacks and then out-running them to the ball. Weiderhold had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, played it around her and then tapped it in for the goal.
Swarthmore (1-0) hosts Eastern University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
