CHESTER, Pa.–An early deficit proved to be too much for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (0-1) to overcome on Thursday, Sep. 1 as the visiting Garnet fell 3-1 to the Pride.
Widener found the back of the net twice in the opening eight minutes to force a Swarthmore timeout. Six minutes later, junior
Sierra Spencer put the visitors on the board with a rebound goal off a scrum in front of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper
Zelda Bank kept the deficit at one with two saves off of penalty corners in the first half.
Swarthmore was on the offensive to begin the second period, registering two corners and two shots on goal by seniors
Ursula Monaghan and
Katherine Ianni in the first three minutes. The Garnet maintained pressure with two corners in the 49th minute, but it was Widener that garnered the next goal with a marker at 56:43 to provide the final score.
