Softball Falls To McDaniel In Two Games

WESTMINSTER, Md.–Juniors Anna Jensen and Sara Planthaber each hit home runs for the Swarthmore College softball team (8-16, 1-5 CC), but it was not enough as the Garnet fell 6-3 and 9-1 to the McDaniel Green Terror in a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5.

Jensen's three-run homer, the second of her career, came in the first inning of game one with Planthaber and Amanda Lopez on first and second, respectively, and put Swarthmore ahead 3-0. McDaniel chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the frame with two runs and tied the game in the third.

Elizabeth Curcio led off the next inning with a single and reached second after classmate Bekah Katz's base hit, but was out on a fielder's choice before a strikeout ended the inning. The Green Terror broke the deadlock in the fifth with two runs on four hits and added an insurance run in the sixth.

In game two, Planthaber gave Swarthmore another early lead with a four-bagger to center field on an 0-1 count. Unfortunately for the Garnet, they would manage only three more hits for the remainder of the game as McDaniel put up runs in every inning except for the second. Sophomore Frankie Ponziani also collected an extra base hit with a double in the sixth.

The Garnet fielded the ball cleanly over the twinbill, committing no errors in both games.

Conference play continues for the team with another road doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, April 9.
