SWARTHMORE, Pa – With a 7-2 win over rival Haverford, the #22 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (14-5, 9-0 CC) finished undefeated in Centennial Conference competition and secured the top seed in the upcoming conference playoffs for the first time in program history.
The regionally-ranked duo of sophomores
Mark Fallati and
Josh Powell recorded an 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles against Luis Acaba and Harrison Elbert as junior
John Larkin and sophomore
Blake Oetting defeated Caleb Mayer and Nick Sweeney at no. 3, 8-2. Larkin and Oetting capped off a perfect 8-0 mark against conference opponents this season.
With a 2-1 lead headed into singles action, the Garnet only dropped one of the next six matches. Fallati earned his second win of the day at the no. 1 position, edging Acaba 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(9).
Double winner Larkin and sophomore
Ari Cepelewicz notched identical 6-2, 6-3 victories at no. 2 and no. 3, respectively, over Josh Moskovitz and Dais Nakayama. Freshman
Simon Vernier also went the distance in a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(9) win over Elbert, while Powell contributed another team point in a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Ishaan Prinz.
As the top seed, the Garnet will host the semifinal and final matches on the weekend of May 7 and May 8. Swarthmore awaits the winner of Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson, which will be determined on Wednesday, May 4.
