MCDANIEL BOX SCOREMARY WASHINGTON BOX SCORESWARTHMORE, Pa – The No. 24 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (8-5, 3-0 CC) first blanked McDaniel College 9-0 before also topping No. 27 University of Mary Washington by a score of 5-4 on Sunday, April 3.
The Garnet's sweep of McDaniel began with identical 8-1 decisions in doubles play. Sophomore
Mark Fallati and classmate
Josh Powell defeated Will Giles and Matthew Diers at No. 1, while junior
John Larkin and sophomore
Blake Oetting took a team point at the No. 2 position over Corey Glocker and Andrew Kendrick. At No. 3, junior
Thomas Vernier paired with freshman
Evan Han to beat Tate Myers and Carter Trousdale.
In singles action, Swarthmore conceded only two games in six matches. Vernier, sophomore
Yosuke Higashi, senior
Matt Hirsh, and Han all shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 positions, respectively. At No. 1 and No. 6, sophomore
Michael Song and senior
William Chung recorded 6-1, 6-0 victories to complete the sweep.
Larkin and Oetting later notched the first team point in doubles play against Mary Washington, handling Derek Hagino and Patrick Hughes, 8-2.
Larkin earned another win at the No. 2 position, defeating Eric Hurwitz 6-1, 6-4, as Fallati also defeated Griffin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman
Simon Vernier pushed his match to three sets, ultimately earning a crucial win, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, over Hughes. With the match tied at 4-4 in team points, Powell clinched the win for the second straight evening at the No. 6 position, recording a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Max Fritsch.
