SWARTHMORE, Pa.–In a game that lasted just under two hours, the Swarthmore College baseball team (21-16, 5-10 CC) bested the visiting Ursinus College Bears by a 5-2 score on Wednesday, April 27 at Clothier Field. With the win, Swarthmore also secured its seventh consecutive winning season.
Freshman
Charles Groppe pitched a complete game and earned his fifth win of the year, scattering six hits and striking out five. Classmate
Jackson Roberts finished 3-for-4 and crossed the plate twice while also driving in a run. Sophomore
Cal Barnett-Mayotte collected two hits and one RBI for the Garnet.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead after the first, but it was short-lived as Swarthmore put four runs on the scoreboard in the second frame.
Nico Aldaco and
Conor Elliott both walked to start the inning and
Steven Matos-Torres singled to load the bases. Roberts, Barnet-Mayotte and
Charles Levitt drove in runs with no outs and
Roy Walker singled on an 0-2 count to give the Garnet a 4-1 advantage.
A sac fly by the Bears trimmed the lead to two before Roberts scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to provide the final margin. The Garnet defense turned two double plays in the game and came up with a highlight in the eighth as Barnett-Mayotte made a diving stop on the left field line and completed the throw to first in time.
Swarthmore travels to Collegeville, Pa. for a rematch against Ursinus on Friday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the final road game of the regular season.
