COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.–For the second consecutive game, the Swarthmore College baseball team (22-16, 6-10 CC) beat the Ursinus College Bears by a 5-2 score after plating four runs in the second inning. Just like Wednesday's game, the Garnet were powered by a nine-inning effort from their starting pitcher as southpaw
Brian Gibbs struck out a career-high 11 batters and issued no walks.
Freshmen
Conor Elliott and
Jackson Roberts each finished with a double and two RBIs while
Roy Walker and
Cal Barnett-Mayotte also had hits for Swarthmore.
The Garnet jumped ahead with four runs in the second, starting off with Walker's single to left field.
Charles Levitt followed with a walk and Roberts cleared the bases with a double to left. Elliott's ground rule double made it 3-0 and a wild pitch provided the final run in the inning as Swarthmore stranded runners in scoring position.
Walker scored again in the third on Elliott's second hit of the afternoon. Gibbs surrendered runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but was otherwise dominant, allowing only one extra-base hit and finishing the game in 116 pitches.
The Garnet conclude their season on Saturday, April 30 with a home doubleheader against the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. as Swarthmore welcomes the boys and girls of Nether-Swarthmore baseball for its annual Kids' Day event.
