SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team (20-16, 4-10 CC) dropped a pair of games to the visiting McDaniel College Green Terror (27-7, 8-6 CC) on Sunday, April 24 as the visitors claimed 7-2 and 7-5 victories over the Garnet.
Senior
Roy Walker finished the afternoon with five hits, including his second home run of the week with a solo shot in game two. Freshman
Charles Levitt also recorded a four-bagger, the first of his collegiate career, on the day.
In game one, Swarthmore started strong as Walker drove in
Ryan Burnett with a double in the first inning and starting pitcher
Brian Gibbs allowed just one player to reach base in the first four frames.
McDaniel evened the game in the fifth and pulled ahead in the next inning. The Garnet used Levitt's homer to knot the game at two, but five unanswered runs from the Green Terror put the game out of reach.
Swarthmore fared better in the nightcap and battled back from a 4-1 deficit to eventually take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh on Walker's homer. Levitt, Walker,
Wesley Fishburn,
David Wolfson and
Steven Matos-Torres all scored for the Garnet and
Nico Aldaco drove in a run.
The Garnet got in a jam in the ninth inning and nearly escaped as freshman reliever
Zach Gonzalez fanned two batters with the bases loaded, but a two-RBI single proved to be the difference in the game.
Senior
Nate Booth was charged with the loss, despite allowing no earned runs (seven earned) in eight frames on the mound.
The baseball team looks to rebound when it hosts Ursinus College on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
