HAVERFORD, Pa.–A rain-delayed doubleheader ended in two losses for the Swarthmore College softball team as the Garnet fell 4-1 and 8-0 to the homestanding Haverford College Fords on Saturday, April 23.
In game one, the Fords led 1-0 entering the third before Swarthmore evened things up.
Marit Vike reached on an error and stole second for her 24th base of the year, a single-season program record. The freshman shortstop later scored on
Sara Planthaber's single to the left side for a 1-1 tie.
The Fords, however, used three unanswered runs to take the front end of the doubleheader. Sophomore
Mary Olesnavich was charged with the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs in six innings in the circle.
Swarthmore's offense faltered in the nightcap as the Garnet managed four hits, two coming from freshman
Amanda Lopez. Haverford jumped ahead with a five-run second inning and ended the game after six with three runs in the frame. Fielding miscues plagued the Garnet as five errors translated to six unearned runs for the Fords.
Vike swiped another base in the game and remains one shy of tying Dickinson's Jen Rodden for the Centennial Conference mark for single-season stolen bases by a freshman.
The Garnet conclude their season on Saturday, April 30 with a home doubleheader against Ursinus College at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
