SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team (10-22, 1-11 CC) struggled to get its offense going as it fell by scores of 9-1 and 5-0 to the visiting Washington College Shorewomen (19-17, 10-4 CC) on Thursday, April 21.
Washington opened game one with two runs in the first inning before Swarthmore answered with one of its own in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore
Frankie Ponziani doubled down the left field line and later scored on an error by the Shorewomen's shortstop.
Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the visitors added six more runs to the board in the next inning and ended the game early after five frames.
Emily Barranca also had a base hit for the Garnet.
Swarthmore kept Washington scoreless for three innings and saved a run in the fourth on a relay from
Sara Planthaber to
Marit Vike to
Bekah Katz for a play at the plate. The Shorewomen ended up scoring two runs in the frame and shut out the Garnet for the remainder of the game, handing them their 11th loss in conference.
The softball team looks to get off the schneid when it travels to nearby Haverford College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 23.
