ALLENTOWN, Pa.–A comeback attempt by the homestanding Muhlenberg Mules (15-17, 6-6 CC) was held off as the Swarthmore College baseball team (20-14, 4-8 CC) won 11-8 on Thursday, April 21 to complete the season sweep of the Mules.
Earlier this week, Swarthmore was victorious by a 7-5 score in Tuesday's game at Clothier Field.
The Garnet collected 14 hits on the afternoon as all but one player in the lineup reached base safely. Sophomore
Ryan Burnett had three hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored twice as well. Freshmen
Jackson Roberts and
Nico Aldaco each bagged a pair of base hits and Shrock drove in two runs with a double to start the scoring in the second.
Jackson Ramey picked up his second win of the week and fourth overall after allowing one earned run in three innings of relief.
Trailing by one, Swarthmore used Shrock's extra base hit to bring in Roberts and
Conor Elliott and added another run on an error by the pitcher. Another error plated
Cal Barnett-Mayotte before Burnett drove in
Charles Levitt with a single through the right side. Yet another Muhlenberg fielding miscue gave Swarthmore a 6-1 lead entering the bottom of the frame.
The Mules got three runs back in the second to narrow the gap to 6-4. In the fourth, Burnett led off with a walk and got all the way to third on
Wesley Fishburn's ground rule double. A sac fly by
Roy Walker and another fielding error made it 8-4 in favor of the Garnet. Swarthmore would eventually lead, 9-4, before the Mules began to chip away at their deficit with three runs combined in the fifth and sixth frames.
In the bottom of the eighth, they brought it back to 9-8 with one out before Ramey settled in and closed the inning on a strike out. Swarthmore answered to the tune of two runs as
David Wolfson led off with a double and later scored on a bunt by Barnett-Mayotte, who also crossed the plate.
The Garnet look to continue their winning ways when they host McDaniel College for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
