Swarthmore Softball Faces Road Setback At Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team (8-14, 1-3 CC) was edged out by a 5-4 score in game one and fell 8-1 in the nightcap as the Garnet dropped two games to the Gettysburg Bullets (16-4, 3-1 CC) on Saturday, April 2.

In game one, Swarthmore collected nine hits, including five doubles, against the Bullets' Aileen Reilly. Marit Vike led off the game with a single and recorded her conference-leading 20th stolen base to get into scoring position. Three batters later, Christen Boas Hayes plated her with a double to right center for a 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg knotted the game at one in the bottom of the frame, but it did not remain deadlocked for long. In the second, Elizabeth Curcio reached base on balls and scored on a double by Bekah Katz combined with a Gettysburg error. Vike followed up with a double of her own to score her classmate Katz and put Swarthmore ahead by a 3-1 margin. In the third, the Bullets answered yet again for a 3-3 tie.

In the fifth, Boas Hayes drove in Sara Planthaber with her second hit of the afternoon for another Garnet advantage, but the homestanding Bullets used two hits and two Swarthmore errors to gain a lead they would not relinquish. Mary Olesnavich was charged with the loss while allowing only two earned runs.

Despite nine hits in game two, Swarthmore managed only one run as it left 11 on base. Planthaber and Curcio had a pair of hits and Curcio scored the lone run on a double to left center by Vike in the second frame.

The softball team remains on the road for a conference doubleheader at McDaniel on Tuesday, March 5. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
