Garnet Drop Pair To Dickinson In Conference Opener

CARLISLE, Pa.–Centennial Conference competition opened with two losses for the Swarthmore College baseball team (16-7, 0-2 CC) as the Garnet fell by 6-4 and 5-0 scores to the Dickinson Red Devils (15-7, 2-0 CC) on Saturday, April 2.

In the first game, Swarthmore collected eight hits and as a result, raised nearly $4,000 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation's fight to end childhood cancer. For more information on Vs. Cancer and its mission, click here.

Junior shortstop Wesley Fishburn led off with a double and Roy Walker's home run to right field gave Swarthmore a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Garnet put another run on the board in the second as Jackson Roberts, who finished 3-for-4 at the dish, crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Red Devils scored three unanswered runs before Swarthmore regained the lead on Ryan Burnett's RBI-single that brought Roberts home for his second run of the afternoon.  In the eighth, however, Dickinson used four hits, including a two-RBI double, to catch and overtake the Garnet for a 6-4 advantage. The side was retired in order in the top of the ninth as Swarthmore fell to 16-6 on the season.

Designated hitter Joseph Jackson also finished with two hits in the first game of the afternoon and Brian Gibbs fell to 2-2 in the complete-game outing.

In the night cap, Swarthmore managed five hits and left 10 on base as they were shut out for the first time this season. Dickinson scored in the second, fourth and seventh frames and capitalized on three Garnet fielding miscues. Jackson added two more hits and Jaron Shrock also finished with a pair after coming off the bench. Nate Booth was charged with his second loss of the season after allowing three earned runs in eight innings and sits at 4-2 on the season.

Swarthmore resumes conference play when it travels to rival Haverford College on Tuesday, April 5 for a game at 3:30 p.m.
