HAVERFORD, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team (16-8, 0-3 CC) suffered a narrow, 4-3 loss to the homestanding Haverford College Fords (14-6, 3-0 CC) on Tuesday, April 5 at Kannerstein Field.
Senior
Roy Walker homered for the second time in three games and freshman
Charles Levitt bagged a pair of doubles from the ninth spot in the order. Shortstop
Wesley Fishburn also finished with two hits and
Ryan Burnett and
Cal Barnett-Mayotte each drove in a run.
Freshman
Charles Groppe fell to 4-2 after allowing four runs, three earned, in four innings on the mound.
The Fords carried a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning when the Garnet put two runs on the board. Walker hit a bomb to center field on a 2-1 count and
Jackson Roberts walked two batters later. Singles by
Steven Matos-Torres and Barnett-Mayotte brought in Roberts and trimmed Swarthmore's deficit to one, though Haverford answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.
Freshmen
Noah Linhart pitched three innings of scoreless relief and classmate
Zach Gonzalez also kept Haverford off the board with an appearance in the eighth frame.
In the seventh, the Garnet inched closer to 4-3 as Levitt doubled and later scored on an RBI by Burnett. Levitt reached scoring position again in the ninth with a one-out double, but could not be brought home to tie the game.
Swarthmore has a quick turnaround with its final nonconference contest of the season, a 4:00 p.m. game at DeSales University on Wednesday, April 6.
