SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Senior outfielder
Roy Walker drove in the game-winning run with a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Swarthmore College baseball team (19-14, 3-8 CC) picked up a 7-5 conference win over the Muhlenberg College Mules on Tuesday, April 19.
Freshmen
Charles Levitt and
Conor Elliott each had two hits for Swarthmore and seven different players crossed the plate on the afternoon. Starting pitcher
Nate Booth allowed four runs, none earned, in the no decision and
Jackson Ramey picked up the win to improve to 3-2. Freshman southpaw
Zach Gonzalez had his second save of the season with no hits and no walks in the ninth.
The Garnet began the scoring in the third as
Ryan Burnett singled in Levitt and later scored himself on a wild pitch. The Mules, however, countered in the fourth by capitalizing on an error with two outs to score four runs.
Jackson Roberts walked to lead off the bottom of the frame and scored three batters later on
Cal Barnett-Mayotte's bunt single. Levitt plated Elliott with a ground out and another wild pitch allowed Barnett-Mayotte to score.
The Mules evened the game in the seventh, setting the stage for Walker's heroics in the bottom of the frame.
Wesley Fishburn walked on four pitches to lead off the inning and Walker blasted a ball over the left field fence to decide the game. Ramey and Gonzalez combined to keep Muhlenberg off the board for the final two innings as the Garnet earned their third conference win of the year.
Swarthmore travels to Allentown, Pa. for a rematch with the Mules on Thursday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m.
