LANCASTER, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team struggled on the road against the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats on Sunday afternoon as the Garnet were swept, 9-1 and 8-0, in a Centennial Conference twinbill.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Diplomats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening frame with five of those runs coming as unearned. F&M added another run in the second for an eight-run advantage and carried the shutout into the fifth inning.
Freshman catcher
Bekah Katz led off with a walk and later scored Swarthmore's lone run on
Elizabeth Curcio's second base hit of the game. The Diplomats closed out the contest with an RBI-triple in the bottom of the frame for the final 9-1 margin.
Senior
Christen Boas Hayes also had a single in the loss.
The offensive struggles continued in game two as the Garnet managed only three hits in the loss. Curcio had her third hit of the day and classmates
Marit Vike and
Amanda Lopez each singled and stole a base. Vike has now nabbed a team and conference-leading 23 bases this year and Lopez is a perfect 19-for-19 on the base path.
The Diplomats scored a run apiece in the second and third innings and broke the game open with a combined six runs in the final two frames.
Swarthmore looks to bounce back with a home doubleheader against Washington College on Thursday, April 21 at 3 and 5:00 p.m.
