GETTYSBURG, Pa.–The Swarthmore College baseball team (18-14, 2-8 CC) wrapped up the weekend with a pair of losses to the Gettysburg Bullets (21-11, 7-3 CC) on Sunday, April 17. The Garnet fell 9-6 in game one and dropped a 9-4 decision in the nightcap.
Wesley Fishburn tied his career-high mark with four hits and also finished with three runs and three RBIs in game one. The junior shortstop homered for the second day in a row with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Roy Walker,
Nico Aldaco and
Conor Elliott also collected multiple hits as the Garnet held a 14-9 advantage in hits. Freshman
Charles Levitt crossed the plate twice at the top of the order and classmate
Jackson Roberts drove in a run for Swarthmore.
Gettysburg took advantage of six fielding miscues to score its nine runs, two of which were earned. Starting pitcher
Brian Gibbs struck out six in five innings on the bump, but ultimately fell to 3-3 on the year.
Fishburn and Walker used back-to-back doubles to put Swarthmore ahead, 1-0, in the first and Fishburn hit his fourth home run of the year to double Swarthmore's advantage. Gettysburg evened the game in the bottom of the fourth before the Garnet answered behind two runs in the fifth. With two outs, Fishburn brought in Elliott and Levitt with a two-RBI single to right field.
Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the Bullets used seven unanswered runs to pull ahead 9-4 entering the ninth. Down but not out, the Garnet mounted a two-run rally as Levitt and Fishburn scored and threatened with two runners in scoring position after a wild pitch. The Bullets escaped the jam and clinched the game with a pop fly to second base.
In game two,
Ryan Burnett matched his career high with four hits in five at-bats. Swarthmore took an early, 1-0 lead in the first as Levitt and Burnett reached with singles and Fishburn picked up where he left off with an RBI-base hit.
Gettysburg rushed ahead with four runs in the third, although the Garnet managed to trim its deficit to just one behind
Jaron Shrock's double that drove in Elliott and Aldaco. Five straight runs gave Gettysburg some breathing room and the Garnet managed just one score for the remainder of the game.
Swarthmore resumes competition when it hosts Muhlenberg College at Clothier Field on Tuesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.
