SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College softball team (10-18, 1-7 CC) dropped a pair of close games to the visiting Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday, April 16, falling by scores of 6-2 and 5-4.
In game one, the Garnet jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run apiece in the second and third innings. Starting pitcher
McKenzie Ward helped her own cause with an RBI-single down the right field line to bring in
Sara Planthaber and
Elizabeth Curcio scored
Amanda Lopez, who singled and stole second to reach scoring position.
Dickinson got a run back in the fifth with a triple to left center and used a five-run rally in the seventh frame for a 6-2 lead it would not relinquish.
Lopez and
Marit Vike each recorded two hits at the top of the order and Ward also finished 2-for-3 in the game.
In the nightcap, Swarthmore trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh before it mounted a furious rally to tie the game and force extra innings.
Mary Olesnavich started things off with a double and
Bekah Katz reached first on an error by the shortstop.
Frankie Ponziani's single loaded the bases and Vike put the Garnet on the board with a base hit toward the shortstop. Lopez drove in a run with a free pass to first and Curcio evened things at four apiece with a two-RBI single after a pitching change. With one out, the Garnet attempted a squeeze bunt, but a pop fly to the third baseman started a double play that ended the inning.
Dickinson used two hits and one Swarthmore error to score the go-ahead run and left Clothier Field with a 5-4 win.
The softball team has a quick turnaround with a road doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall on Sunday, April 17 at 1 and 3:00 p.m.
