NAPLES, Fla.—Swarthmore College Softball split the second day of spring break games with a 7-3 loss against Drew followed by a 9-4 win over Nazareth in the nightcap.
The Garnet scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth against Nazareth to take control of the game.
GAME ONE: Drew 7, Swarthmore 3A six-run top of the second inning proved to be the difference in game one Tuesday. The Garnet were charged with three errors in the frame which led to five unearned runs.
The Garnet retired the Drew Rangers in order in the top of the third and then posted two runs to chip away at the lead.
With
Amanda Lopez on third and
Marit Vike on second,
Fran Reckers knocked a single up the middle to advance the runners, plating Lopez. An infield error allowed Vike to score during
Sara Planthaber's at-bat. The four aforementioned Garnet players all had stolen second base in the inning.
Drew added an unearned run in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 7-2. Swarthmore tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Frankie Ponziani reached first on a passed ball and eventually scored on a fielder's choice. The Garnet however couldn't muster a larger rally and fell 7-3.
The Garnet tallied five hits to Drew's 10 hits.
Anna Jensen led the Garnet with a 2-for-3 game.
Amanda Lopez,
McKenzie Ward and
Fran Reckers each added a hit. Reckers had a team-high two RBIs.
Emily Bowman struck out three batters in the loss while walking none.
McKenzie Ward pitched 5.2 innings in relief, striking out three and walking none as well.
GAME TWO: Nazareth 4, Swarthmore 9Swarthmore broke game two open in the bottom of the sixth with a five-run inning.
Tied 4-4, the Garnet had two runners reach via walks in the fifth and chased the starting pitcher from the contest. After a walk loaded the bases, Planthaber smacked a single to left to score Bowman. Vike then dashed home on a passed ball to give Swarthmore a 6-4 advantage.
Bekah Katz clubbed a double to left center to plate Planthaber and Lopez. Katz moved up to third on a wild pitch, and then
Elizabeth Curcio smacked another RBI-single, scoring Katz. Curcio went 3-for-4 in game two with three RBIs.
The Garnet posted two runs in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back doubles by Planthaber and Jensen led to the first run, and a single by
Emily Barranca sent Jensen home.
The Nazareth College Golden Flyers evened the score in the top of the third, but an RBI-single by Curcio scored Barranca. Curcio knocked in another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single to right field that scored Lopez from third.
The Golden Flyers equalized the score at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
Swarthmore's
Mary Olesnavich went the distance, striking out two while allowing two earned runs. Olesnavich induced 14 ground outs.
The Garnet continue their spring break schedule on Thursday with a game against Eastern Nazarene at 1 p.m. and then Albion at 3 p.m.
