Softball Splits In Spring Break Conclusion

FORT MYERS, Fla.–The Swarthmore College softball team (5-3) wrapped up its spring break slate of games on Thursday, March 10 with a 5-2 win over Eastern Nazarene and a 3-0 loss to Albion in the night cap.

GAME ONE: Swarthmore 5, Eastern Nazarene 2
In the first game, Swarthmore scored all five of its runs in the second frame and got things started with a leadoff double from Elizabeth Curcio. Frankie Ponziani followed up with a nine-pitch at-bat before reaching first on a dropped third strike. Ponziani stole second and Lopez loaded the bases with a bunt.

A combination of a single by Emily Bowman and a double from Marit Vike drove in three runs and Swarthmore later took advantage of a fielding error to bring in Bowman. Freshman Bekah Katz completed the scoring on a sac fly to drive in her classmate Vike.

Eastern Nazarene got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, but freshman McKenzie Ward entered with two outs and settled in, allowing four hits, no runs and no walks in 5.2 innings as she improved to 2-2 on the year.

Vike and Curcio each finished the contest with two hits while Fran Reckers drew two walks.

GAME TWO: Albion 3, Swarthmore 0
The Garnet faced a setback in the second game of the day as a three-run fifth inning proved to be the difference for the Albion Brits. Vike collected two more hits and Lopez, Curcio, Bowman and Sara Planthaber recorded one apiece. Sophomore Mary Olesnavich fell to 1-2 on the year with three earned runs in five innings.

Swarthmore resumes competition on Tuesday, March 15 in Chester, Pa. with doubleheader against Widener University starting at 4:00 p.m.
