Garnet Complete Comeback In 12-5 Win Over Lehman

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Trailing by five after four innings, the Swarthmore College baseball team rallied with 12 unanswered runs against Lehman College (2-4) to remain undefeated at 7-0 on Tuesday, March 8.

Wesley Fishburn, Ryan Burnett, Joseph Jackson, Roy Walker and Charles Levitt each collected two hits for the Garnet with Jackson also recording a team-high four RBIs. Fishburn crossed the plate three times while Burnett, Levitt and Nico Aldaco each scored twice.

Freshman Zach Gonzalez earned his first collegiate win as he held down the fort, allowing no hits in fifth, sixth and seventh innings while the offense mounted a comeback. The southpaw also completed two pickoffs at first base.

Junior Aidan Miller picked up his first save of the year with five strikeouts and two walks in the final two frames.

Down by four in the third, the Garnet had an opportunity to put runs on the board and close the gap, but unfortunately left the bases loaded as Lehman escaped the inning.

Swarthmore, however, showed life in the fifth with Levitt reaching third on a wild pitch after stealing second.  Fishburn drove him in and walks by Aldaco and Burnett loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Fishburn and Jackson followed up by bringing in Aldaco for a 5-3 game.

In the seventh, Swarthmore erupted for five additional runs and took the lead for good. Fishburn and Burnett each drove in runners and the Garnet took advantage of a passed ball, a balk and an error by Lehman's third baseman to go ahead 8-5. The team added four more insurance runs in the eighth, highlighted by Jackson's three-RBI, bases clearing double and a two-bagger to right field by Walker.

The Garnet will play two tomorrow, facing off against Penn State Berks in a spring break doubleheader at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
