MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—
David Wolfson hit his second home run of the season as the Swarthmore College baseball team (6-0) took care of Mt. Aloysius (4-3) by a 7-3 score on Monday, March 7 in Myrtle Beach.
Starter
Brian Gibbs picked up his first win of the season, giving up three runs and striking out seven in six innings of work. Freshman
Ricky Conti also pitched well as he allowed only one baserunner in two frames of middle relief. Third baseman
Conor Elliott finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and
Cal Barnett-Mayotte and
Jaron Shrock each drove in two runs for the Garnet. Swarthmore stole four bases for the fourth time this season.
The Garnet fell behind after the first inning, but Wolfson answered immediately with a solo shot to left field on the first pitch he saw.
Roy Walker followed up with a single down the left field line and two batters later, an error by the Mounties' catcher gave Swarthmore a 2-1 lead it would not surrender.
In the top of the third, the Garnet put two more runs on the board as Shrock hit a single toward the shortstop with the bases loaded, driving in Walker and Wolfson. Mt. Aloysius got two runs back in the bottom of the inning with a home run of its own and could have scored more if not for a full-speed, running grab by Walker in deep center field.
Freshman
Charles Levitt led off the fourth by getting hit by a pitch and stealing second to reach scoring position with no outs. Elliott scored him with a single through the left side for a 5-3 advantage.
Swarthmore completed the scoring in the fifth frame with Barnett-Mayotte's two-RBI single that drove in Walker and Wolfson. First-year pitcher
Noah Linhart ended the game with three swinging strikeouts in his second appearance of the season.
