Men's Lacrosse Caught In Second Half By Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Swarthmore College Men's  Lacrosse had its season-opening three-game win streak interrupted on Saturday as the Garnet fell on the road to the Vassar College Brewers, 11-7.

The Garnet led 6-3 going into halftime, but Vassar (2-1) blazed its way to eight consecutive goals in the second half.

Will Black led the Garnet with a pair of first-half goals. Stephen Ducey, Matt Johnson, Tom Fitch, Sam Merritt, and Griffin Johnston all tallied a goal for the Garnet. Cole Fox recorded 10 saves in the crease for Swarthmore.

Trailing 1-0 in the first quarter, Swarthmore got on the board with a goal by Black assisted by the freshman Johnston. Ducey then won the resulting faceoff, scooped up the ground ball and fired home a goal just seven seconds after Black's score. Ducey went 10-for-15 on faceoffs in the contest.

Vassar knotted the score at 2-2 just before the first-quarter horn sounded.

Swarthmore took advantage of a three-minute man-up situation, the result of an illegal stick used by Vassar's faceoff man, and tallied two extra-man goals in that span. Johnson, set up by Dylan Rittenhouse, scored 19 seconds into the quarter to return the lead to Swarthmore. Fitch added a goal two minutes later.

Vassar's Liam Moriarty returned from the three-minute non-releasable penalty and then scored the Brewers' only goal of the second period two minutes later.

The Garnet closed out the period with Merritt (9:18) and Black (2:06) both finding the back of the net.

Swarthmore's lead slipped away in the third as the Brewers scored five times in that period. They added three more assisted goals in the fourth period. The Garnet got one back late as Johnston scored with 34 seconds left.

Swarthmore has 10 days until its next game. The Garnet host The College of Wooster on March 15.
