CENTER VALLEY, Pa.—A lights-out shooting performance by Swarthmore College Men's Basketball on Saturday propelled the Garnet into the ECAC South Championship on Sunday.
The Garnet shot 60.8 percent overall and 9-for-18 from beyond the arc in the 84-72 win over PSU-Behrend. Spearheading that effort was sophomore guard
Matt Brennan who shot a blistering 88.9 percent from the floor (8-for-9) and 83.3 percent from 3-point range (5-for-6). Brennan dropped a game-high 27 points, a new career high for him. He set the tone early, knocking down a 3-pointer two seconds after the opening tip.
Zack Yonda added 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting, and
Henry Cousineau went 5-for-8 to finish with 11 points.
Swarthmore led by nine after five minutes of play following consecutive baskets by Brennan. Cousineau drilled a 3-pointer with 6:22 left in the first to give Swarthmore its first double-digit lead of the game, 31-21.
The 10-point lead carried over into the second half, and Behrend would only pull within single-digits once more the rest of the game. Behrend pulled to within eight, 50-42 following a dunk. Unfazed by the brief Behrend run, Swarthmore countered with an 8-0 run composed of a Yonda jumper and 3-pointers from Brennan and
Shane Loeffler.
The Garnet extended the lead to 20 and never looked back following
Jim Lammers getting to the basket for a layup with 8:56 to play.
With the win in Saturday's semifinal game, the Garnet are set to face Neumann University on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the campus of DeSales University.
