SWARTHMORE, Pa.—With 20 seconds remaining in Wednesday night's Centennial Conference contest, sophomore attackman Nathan Relich fired in the game-winning goal to lift Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse over Muhlenberg College 5-4.
Relich brought the ball back into play from the end line, worked his way to the front of the goal and sank the fade-away shot from just off the right post. For Relich, the goal is his 11th this season.
Muhlenberg gained possession after the ensuing faceoff and got off a last-second shot. However, Swarthmore goalie Cole Fox, as he had done throughout the game, denied Muhlenberg's shot and secured the win. Fox tallied 11 saves in the low-scoring affair to help Swarthmore improve to 5-3 (1-1 Centennial).
Muhlenberg dipped to 3-7 (0-2 Centennial).
Relich led the Garnet with two goals, and Matt Johnson, Cam Marsh and Griffin Johnston added the remaining goals.
Swarthmore produced a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Marsh scored with 11:52 to go after a helper from Johnson. Then with 7:55 left in the quarter, Johnston finished a leaping shot after catching a feed from Marsh.
The Mules rallied for three goals in the second quarter to apparently gain control of the game.
Marsh provided his second assist of the game with 6:37 to go in the third quarter, locating Johnson for the equalizing goal. An offsides turnover by Muhlenberg led to a transition play for Swarthmore early in the fourth. Alex Mandel quickly passed the ball upfield and found Johnson who dealt to Relich near the left post for the score.
Muhlenberg knotted the score at 4-4 with 7:35 to play, and flashbacks to last season's OT matchup came to mind (a game Swarthmore won 8-7).
Overtime, however, was not necessary on Wednesday after Relich buried the go-ahead goal.
Swarthmore travels to Misericordia University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
