SWARTHMORE, Pa.–Sophomore
Joseph Jackson hit his fourth home run of the season, but it was not enough as the Swarthmore College baseball team (16-5) wrapped up its eight-game homestand with a 9-2 loss to the Arcadia University Knights (12-8-1) on Tuesday, March 29.
Ryan Burnett,
David Wolfson and
Jackson Roberts each had a pair of hits, but the Garnet struggled to drive in runners, leaving 12 on the base over the course of the game.
Arcadia took a 6-0 lead after three innings before Swarthmore put two on the board in the fourth. Jackson hit a solo shot to left center on the first pitch he saw and Wolfson and Roberts followed up with base hits. Wolfson crossed the plate on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 6-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Garnet drew two walks to load the bases with two outs, but Arcadia escaped the jam on a groundout to short. The Knights scored two more in the ninth to provide the final margin of 9-2.
Both teams pitched by committee and starter
Charles Groppe picked up his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.
Swarthmore begins Centennial Conference competition on Saturday, Apr. 2 when it travels to Dickinson for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. Both teams have raised money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation's fight against childhood cancer by receiving pledges for every hit earned during the first game of the afternoon. For more information on Swarthmore's efforts, click
